Embedding Art in Research

7 Aug 2020

Australia Council Creative Connections presentation

On 7 August 2020, Diversity Arts’ Executive Director Lena Nahlous joined Creatives of Colour’s Rani Pramesti to discuss research in the arts, especially in relation to diverse audiences.

About the session

We know that research has an important role to play in helping us argue our case and advocate, but how can we centralise artists and creativity in the approaches that we take? How can research be embedded into creative processes, and how can artists be embedded into research processes? And how can research be presented in accessible and engaging ways for diverse audiences?

This session includes Auslan interpretation and closed captions.

The influence of this research and advocacy approach is that it’s about shifting culture, not just imposing targets. And I’m a big believer in imposing targets, but it’s not going to shift systemic racism. At the end of the day, targets are a response that retrofits a system that doesn’t accommodate us. And I’m not using that at all as an argument to not argue for targets.
