Australian Publishing Industry Workforce Survey on Diversity and Inclusion – 2026

Australian Publishing Industry Workforce Survey on Diversity and Inclusion – 2026

Australian publishing is becoming more culturally diverse. The second Workforce Survey on Diversity and Inclusion, run by the Australian Publishers Association (APA) with the University of Melbourne, drew 774 responses between March and May 2026 and measures progress since 2022.

  • First Nations representation: 1% to 3.3%
  • Asian cultural identity: 8.5% to 12.5%
  • Non-British European identity: 10.5% to 31.7%

Although most respondents feel included and respected in their own workplace, only 38.2% agreed or strongly agreed that the culture in the publishing industry is inclusive. The APA’s D&I Working Group is calling on publishers to hire and train more inclusively, offer flexible work, resource D&I committees and share what’s working in their workplaces.
