Volunteer with DARTS

Volunteering your time with Diversity Arts Australia (DARTS) is an invaluable way to contribute to increasing cultural diversity in the Australian creative sector.

DARTS is the key national organisation working to increase cultural diversity in the arts. We receive funding from the Australia Council for the Arts and UNESCO, among others, to promote diverse artists, support the creative sector and actively build ‘arts that look like Australia’.

We have volunteering opportunities for arts workers, community development workers, students or anyone who would like to make a contribution to a dynamic and growing national organisation with extensive links throughout the arts sector.

“The workforce is hard to break into and they not only provided me with valuable experience but also networking opportunities and a real clear picture of where I want to go in terms of my goals, aspirations and career.”

Nickin Alexander, DARTS volunteer 2016-17

Reasons to volunteer with DARTS

  1. Gain hands-on experience in community cultural development and the Australian arts sector

  2. Extend your skills in project management, creative decision making, collaborative project development, digital media and event planning

  3. Boost your portfolio of published and produced work

  4. Build your networks in the arts, cultural development and community sectors

  5. Work on some truly inspiring projects that will stretch your skills and add some real juice to your creative portfolio

“I met interesting people and gained different perspectives and a new found respect for people of different ethnicities in the arts sector and for those that advocate to make a difference.”

Nickin Alexander, DARTS volunteer 2016-17

What sort of work can a volunteer expect to do?

At DARTS we very much want to find out where your skills and interests lie and make sure the experience is mutually beneficial for our volunteers and the organisation. We are looking for students, artists, arts workers and anyone who has an interest in improving cultural diversity in the Australian creative sector.  Depending on your experience, you might find yourself researching best practice strategies in overseas arts organisations, interviewing artists for our podcast and website, producing and editing microfilms, developing online communications and social media campaigns, assisting at events, working in our archive or helping out in our office.

The process of finding a role to fit you will be a collaborative one and whatever you do with DARTS we will support you to extend your skills, enhance your portfolio, and increase your experience and professional networks in the arts and culture scene.
